Benue Stakeholders Commend Gov Ortom Over Security Measures

Benue State stakeholders at an expanded Security Council meeting today commended Governor Samuel Ortom for his proactive approach to prevent the escalation of the security situation in Konshisha Local Government Area after the killing of an Army Captain and 11 other soldiers. 

A communique signed by Governor Ortom and Secretary to the State Government, Professor Anthony Ijohor, SAN, which was read by the Governor at the end of the Security Council meeting had the following resolutions. 

"The meeting commends the efforts made by His Excellency Governor Samuel Ortom to prevent the escalation of the crisis following the killing of soldiers in Konshisha Local Government and the efforts he has made to ensure peace and security in the State. 

"The stakeholders meeting also commends the Governor and stakeholders for ensuring the recovery of 11 out of the 12 weapons that were taken away from the murdered soldiers. 

"The meeting mandates the Governor to lead a delegation of Benue State to visit the President and Commander in Chief of the Nigeria Armed Forces to condole him for what has happened and thank him for his patience and understanding. 

"The meeting commends the efforts made by His Excellency Governor Samuel Ortom and other stakeholders to prevent the escalation of the crisis in Konshisha Local Government. 

"The Meeting resolves that all those involved in the killing of the soldiers should be arrested and prosecuted.

"The meeting condemns in strong terms any form of attack on security agencies. 

"Stakeholders have been advised to sustain support to the Government of Benue State and the Security Agencies. 

"The meeting urges Traditional Rulers and other stakeholders to ensure that the remaining weapon taken from the murdered soldiers is returned. 

"Members of communities in Benue State have been told not to harbour criminals in their communities. Community members should report suspicious persons in their midst to security agencies. 

"The meeting recommends increased surveillance in Benue communities while Traditional rulers and other stakeholders should support security agencies through intelligence gathering. 

"The meeting cautions politicians against the use of thugs to harass opponents. 

"The meeting charges leaders at all levels to intensify synergy in combating criminality in the State. 

"The meeting recommends that all illegal revenue check points should be dismantled with immediate effect.

"The meeting supports the call for restructuring and devolution of powers, as well as a review of the revenue sharing formula. 

"The meeting recommends that security support be provided to Traditional Rulers to enable them discharge their duties effectively at the grassroots level."
