FG Distributes Farm Imputes To 150 Rice Farmers in Benue

Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) distributed farm inputs to 150 rice farmers in Benue.

The Minister of Agriculture, Alhaji Mohammed Nanono performed the function on Wednesday in Makurdi.

Represented by the Agricultural Officer, Rice Value Chain, Mr Michael Ameh, Nanono said that 10 states were benefitting from the programme and Benue was one of them.

The minister said that the aim was to assist farmers with the inputs to enable them step up production of rice and enhance their income too.

“Each farmer will be given 50kg of certified rice seeds, four bags of NPK, two bags of Urea and one litre of soil amender.

“They will also be given four litres of pesticides and five litres of pre and post emergence herbicides,” he said.

He advised them to make judicious use of the inputs to enable them have bumper harvest.

Meanwhile, the Director, Federal Department of Agriculture, Mrs Karima Babangida who was also represented by Ameh, advised them against selling the inputs, stressing that monitoring teams were in place to catch those that might want to sell them.

Also, the State Director, FMARD, Dr Thompson Abi, disclosed that the gesture was to cushion the effect of COVID-19 which had ravaged all sectors of the economy.

Abi appreciated the Federal Government and JICA for the support they gave to rice farmers, stressing that it would go a long way to cushion the effect of COVID-19 and boost food production.

The Director, Agricultural Services, Benue Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (BENARDA), Mr Sabastine Aba, admonished the farmers to liaise with Extension Workers in their domains to teach them how they would apply the inputs effectively for optimal result.

One of the beneficiaries who spoke on behalf of the farmers, Mrs Esther Ajoko, appreciated the FG and JICA for coming to their aid.

Ajoko promised that they would make maximum use of the inputs to have bountiful harvest at the end.
