Aircraft Accidents Associated with Weather, Meteorological Conditions in Nig - Olateru

The Commissioner/CEO - AIB-N, Engr. Akin Olateru, said evidences from past and recent aircraft accidents and incidents in Nigeria have been associated with weather and meteorological conditions, amongst which wind-shear is a great cause for concern.  

Engr. Akin stated this on Tuesday during the 2nd Nigerian Aviation Workforce Safety (NAWS) 2021 Symposium held at the NAF conference center, Abuja.
He noted that, the second NAWS 2021 Symposium established a solid nexus with recommendations of the maiden NAWS Symposium to strengthen the Nigeria Aviation Safety Management System and to continually assess preparative action plans to mitigating the impact of unusual meteorological conditions and climate change on aviation safety. 
He said that, theme of this year’s symposium, "Mitigating/Preventing the Adverse Impact of Windshear Occurrence in Nigeria Airspace" are huge opportunities for improving awareness, knowledge, competencies and technological capabilities for wind-shear safety system.
He noted that, with the calibre of speakers and panellists present and ready to deliver on the subject matter, have no doubt that the participants would be enriched 

"AIB-N is already achieving the overall goal of NAWS 2021 SYMPOSIUM, which is to provide the needed national platform for annual collaborative and interactive engagements and a strategic means of synchronizing the voice of all stakeholders in the aviation industry to ensure aviation workforce safety". He said.

In his keynote address, Director General/CEO NiMet, Prof. Mansur Mantazu, disclosed that, thunderstorm, induced land and sea breeze and many others are course of Windshear.

He explained that early warning and dectetive mechanisms have proven to be the only dependable solution to the  harzards of Windshear.

The Director General in his paper, "Wind-shear and the Nigerian Airspace" also said, pilot awareness of the existence Windshear before landing or take off enables the pilot to make maneuver in order to avoid the impact of wind shear. Adding that pilot training will recognize, avoid and recover from windshear encounter.

Also speaking, Director General/CEO NCAA, Capt. Musa Nuhu said that, flood due to intense precipitation episode and storm surge as a result of intense extra tropical cyclones are a possible threat to the  viability of low-lying airports at coastal locations unless protective measures are taken.

He stated in paper "Aviation Safety in the eyes of climate change"  that high attitude icing is also likely to increase with more intense cumulonimbus clouds and  aries of the cropopaus due to the  higher temperatures and  higher air masses.
