Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have advocated for Rehabilitation Centres for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for the purpose of rehabilitating bad elements amongst her workforce.

They stated this during a two day Summit organised by the Network On Police Reform In Nigeria (NOPRIN) in collaboration with the Benue State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the summit was "Strengthening Police Reforms in Nigeria".

The participants said that the centre would serve as a place where officers who had taken to drugs, alcohol, other substance abuse above all bad elements would be rehabilitated.

They lamented the rate at which many police officers commit extrajudicial killings as a result of the influence of the drugs, alcohol and other substance abuse.

The National Coordinator, NOPRIN, Mr Emmanuel Ikule, said that the aim of the organization was to facilitate the creation of enabling legislation to enhance police effectiveness.

Ikule further said that the organization intended to promote quality training and sustained human resources development in the NPF.

"Another objective of  the organization is to enhance commuity policing relations and partnership in Nigeria

"Also, to facilitate the establishment of a standard procedure to monitor and evaluate police operations and accountability," Ikule said.

Meanwhile, the Police Spokesperson in Benue, SP Sewuese Anene, acknowledged that there was a gap between the police and the public, stressing that plans were underway to close the existing gaps.

The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Barr Teryima Nguher, said that the summit was a sure way of educating the public about the nature and work of the police.

Represented by the Deputy Director in the ministry, Mrs Grace Wata-Tachia, Nguher urged NOPRIN to step down the sensitization at all levels of government.

A human rights activist, Barr Justin Gbagir, said that all the good and great works done by the police would be subsumed if they continue to keep the bad eggs in service, adding that all the bad elements in the police should be flushed out.

Gbagir, however, pointed out that the police were very important in the society, stating that there was no doubt about it.

"Without them we will have a lawless society which was what was experienced during the State of Nature," Gbagir said.
