FG Calls For Support From NGF To Improve Access To Safe Water, Sanitation and End Open Defecation

Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation Engineer Professor Joseph Terlumun Utsev has called for support from Nigeria Governor's Forum NGF to effectively implement the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in ensuring access to clean and safe water, boost food production and end open defecation in the country.

Professor Utsev made the call on Friday when he led the management team of the Ministry on a courtesy call on the Kwara State Governor and Chairman Nigeria Governor's Forum Abdul-Rahman Rasak at Government House Ilorin, Kwara State.

The minister told the Governor that as leaders of their states, NGF is a critical body whose support is key for effective implementation of the policies and programmes of President Tinubu led administration which is aimed at boosting food production through provision of water for irrigation.

According to him, the choice of Kwara to commence nationwide familiarisation visit for on the spot assessment of projects of the Ministry was to seek his support as Chairman of NGF  .

The Minister informed the Governor of the Federal Government's target to end open defecation in the country by the year two thousand and twenty five and the need to intensify sensitization and wareness campaigns in rural dwellers on the need for people  to desist from the practice of open Defecation to improve personal hygiene and reduce ailments associated with the practice.

Professor Utsev also announced that a team from the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation was carrying out a survey of Rivers Niger and Benue for possible dredging by the federal government.

Responding, The Kwara's State Governor and Chairman Nigeria Governor's Forum Abdul-Rahman Rasak said he was delighted that Professor Utsev is a Water and Sanitation Engineer with vast knowledge in his area of specialty , assured him of the readiness of Nigeria Governors to work in synergy with the federal government to achieve its Renewed Hope Agenda of ensuring food security and improve sanitation saying it was in realization of the agenda that the Kwara State Government has paid its counterpart contribution for implementation of Water , Sanitation and Hygiene WASH project and other development programmes.

He appealed to the Federal Government to dredge Rivers Niger and Benue to boost marine economy in the country and address perennial flooding that has continued to cause devastation in the country.
