Minister, Customs boss explore tech-driven reforms for trade, border security

The Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, has expressed readiness to collaborate with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on leveraging technology for improved trade facilitation and border security.

During a courtesy visit to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, at the NCS Headquarters in Abuja, both leaders discussed key areas where innovation could enhance customs operations.

The discussions focused on adopting AI, blockchain, and automation to streamline customs processes, improve transparency, and enhance security. 

Renewable energy solutions, including solar minigrids, were also considered to ensure sustainable power supply to customs facilities and border posts.

In strengthening border security, the minister emphasized deploying advanced surveillance technologies, drones, and data analytics to combat smuggling and other cross-border crimes. 

They also explored ways to promote local content development, encouraging the use of indigenous technology in customs equipment and logistics.

Capacity building and research collaborations between the ministry and NCS were also highlighted as essential in driving technological advancements in trade compliance and customs management.

The engagement underscores the role of science, technology, and innovation in transforming Nigeria’s trade and border management landscape for greater efficiency and sustainability.
