IGP Disu Promises Reform, Accountability at National Police Day Parade in Abuja

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has pledged sweeping reforms, stronger accountability, and improved community relations within the Nigeria Police Force.

He made this commitment on Tuesday during the second edition of the National Police Day grand parade held at Eagle Square.

Addressing officers, stakeholders, and members of the public, the IGP described the occasion as a defining moment for policing in Nigeria, noting that it marked his first national address since assuming office.

Disu expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for institutionalising National Police Day, describing the initiative as a strong vote of confidence in the Force’s ability to reform and better serve the country.

He paid tribute to fallen officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, acknowledging their sacrifices and assuring their families that their contributions would not be forgotten.

“Every life lost in service is a debt on our conscience,” he said, promising that under his leadership, the Force would honour fallen heroes through improved standards and service delivery.

The IGP also addressed serving officers, commending their courage and dedication, while stressing the need for professionalism and discipline.

He warned that misconduct would not be tolerated, stating that rank and uniform would not shield any officer from accountability.
“Authority will never override the rule of law. There will be no sacred cows,” Disu declared.

At the same time, he assured officers of improved welfare, better training, and enhanced operational support, noting that a professional police force must be built on motivated and well-equipped personnel.

Speaking directly to Nigerians, the police chief acknowledged the growing gap between the Force and the public, promising deliberate efforts to rebuild trust.

He said the Nigeria Police Force would become more accountable, humane, and community-oriented.
“We will not stand above you. We will stand with you,” he said.

Disu further highlighted ongoing reforms, including investments in training, technology, and community engagement, as well as the introduction of new mechanisms for internal discipline and public accountability.

According to him, the Force is transitioning to an intelligence-led, technology-driven, and community-focused policing model aimed at tackling modern security challenges.

He emphasised that effective policing requires collaboration, noting that security is a shared responsibility between the police and the public.

The IGP also acknowledged the support of the Armed Forces, other security agencies, traditional rulers, civil society groups, and the media in strengthening national security.

He extended appreciation to corporate partners and sponsors for their contributions to the success of the Police Day celebration, describing the partnership as vital to nation-building.
Reaffirming his vision, Disu declared the beginning of a new era for the Nigeria Police Force, anchored on integrity, discipline, and service.

“This will be a new era where integrity is non-negotiable, discipline is enforced, and trust is rebuilt,” he said.
The event concluded with goodwill messages and a renewed call for collective efforts toward a safer and more secure Nigeria.
