By Aviashima Toom, Abuja
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emerged as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 general election following the conclusion of the party’s historic direct primary election.
The results were officially announced at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja after a nationwide collation exercise supervised by the APC Presidential Primary Election Committee chaired by former Senate President Pius Anyim.
Tinubu defeated fellow aspirant, Mr. Stanley Osifo, by a landslide margin after polling millions of votes across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Tinubu Accepts Nomination
In his acceptance speech, President Tinubu described the moment as “another proud chapter” in Nigeria’s democratic journey and thanked party members for renewing their confidence in his leadership.
“I accept, with humility and profound gratitude, the nomination of our great party, the All Progressives Congress, to stand again as its presidential candidate in the 2027 election,” Tinubu declared.
The president said his administration had undertaken difficult but necessary reforms over the last three years, citing the removal of fuel subsidy, foreign exchange reforms, infrastructure expansion, education loans, and reforms in the power sector as major achievements.
According to him, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund has already disbursed over N282 billion to more than 1.5 million beneficiaries.
Tinubu also highlighted improvements in electricity generation and metering, revealing that the government had supplied 2.5 million meters under the Presidential Metering Initiative while pursuing reforms to make the power sector more investable.
On security, the president acknowledged ongoing challenges in parts of the country but assured Nigerians that his administration remained committed to restoring peace nationwide.
“We will not rest until we restore peace and stability to every corner of our country,” he said.
He further called on the National Assembly to amend the Constitution to allow the establishment of state police “as a matter of national emergency.”
Earlier, the Chairman of the APC Presidential Primary Election Committee, Senator Pius Anyim, praised the adoption of the direct primary system, describing it as a landmark democratic reform.
According to him, the exercise was conducted across 8,809 wards nationwide and reflected the APC’s commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and internal democracy.
“The APC has become the first political party to adopt the direct primary election model for its presidential primary election,” Anyim stated.
He said the process gave every party member an opportunity to participate directly and reduced the controversies often associated with delegate-based elections.
APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, also commended party officials, governors, and election coordinators for ensuring a smooth and transparent exercise.
“We decided to make this programme live on television and online for the world to see the transparency in APC and our commitment to deepening democracy,” he said.
State-by-State Results
Results presented at the national collation centre showed overwhelming support for Tinubu across the country.
Some of the notable figures included:
Lagos — 814,988 votes
Kaduna — 618,914 votes
Imo — 582,960 votes
Kano — 500,852 votes
Katsina — 467,003 votes

Borno — 414,988 votes

Enugu — 383,382 votes
Benue — 374,787 votes
Osifo recorded relatively few votes across the states, with his highest figures coming from Kano, Bauchi, and Niger states.
Tinubu used the occasion to call for national unity and political cooperation ahead of the 2027 election.
“To those who may disagree with us politically, we extend a hand of partnership in nation-building,” he said.
He added that the next election should represent “a reaffirmation of Nigeria’s democratic maturity” rather than merely a contest among political parties.
The APC presidential candidate pledged to continue pursuing economic expansion, infrastructure development, food security, energy reforms, and democratic consolidation if re-elected.
“Together, and with the help of God Almighty, we shall build a more secure, united, and prosperous Nigeria for generations to come,” Tinubu said.
