The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged commanders across the Nigerian Army to strengthen operational effectiveness through accountability, professionalism and results-oriented leadership.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, in Abuja.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Chief of Army Staff Bi-Annual Conference 2026 held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites, Asokoro, the Army Chief said the conference provided a strategic platform to review ongoing operations and develop new approaches to address Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
Lieutenant General Shaibu stated that discussions at the conference focused on enhancing operational responses, improving training structures and adapting to the realities of the contemporary security environment.
According to him, the resolutions reached during the conference are aimed at building a more agile, combat-ready, technologically advanced and mission-oriented Nigerian Army.
Highlighting recent capability improvements, the COAS disclosed that the Army had acquired additional tactical drones and reconfigured aviation assets for combat operations. He noted that the upgrades have enhanced intelligence gathering, precision targeting, operational mobility and casualty evacuation.
The Army Chief also emphasized sustained progress in recruitment, advanced training, professional military education and leadership development, stressing that discipline, competence and merit-based leadership remain critical to institutional growth and operational success.
Reaffirming his “soldier-first” philosophy, Lieutenant General Shaibu said troop welfare remains central to mission accomplishment. He directed commanders to prioritize the prompt payment of entitlements, improved healthcare services, educational support and enhanced welfare packages for personnel and their families.
He urged participants to ensure that resolutions from the conference translate into measurable operational outcomes, noting that the true value of the gathering lies in effective implementation.
The COAS expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support and strategic guidance to the Nigerian Army. He also commended the Minister of Defence, Minister of State for Defence, Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs and heads of security and intelligence agencies for their collaboration and support.
The conference also featured the presentation of COAS commendation plaques to senior officers who successfully completed their tours of duty, as well as the unveiling of the Nigerian Army Heritage and Feature Centre insignia.
