COWA President to Lead “Walk for a Greener Nigeria” Climate Campaign in Abuja
The President of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), Mrs Kikelomo Adeniyi, will on Saturday, May 16, 2026, lead a climate advocacy campaign tagged “Walk for a Greener Nigeria” in Abuja, as part of efforts aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and climate awareness across the country.
The advocacy walk, scheduled to commence from the Nigeria Customs Service Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, is expected to attract members of the association, environmental advocates, community leaders, volunteers, and other stakeholders committed to ecological sustainability.
The initiative forms part of COWA’s broader Green Borders sustainability programme, designed to encourage grassroots participation in environmental protection through advocacy, public engagement, and community-based interventions.
The campaign comes on the heels of the association’s recent nationwide “1,000 Trees in One Hour” exercise, which mobilised participants across different parts of Nigeria in support of climate action and ecosystem restoration.
Speaking ahead of the event, Mrs Adeniyi stressed the need for collective responsibility in addressing environmental challenges, noting that sustainable development can only be achieved through active citizen participation.
“If we are to secure a healthier and more sustainable future for our communities, we must all recognise that environmental stewardship is a shared duty. This initiative is not simply about environmental advocacy; it is about inspiring responsibility, strengthening awareness, and encouraging collective action that can endure for generations,” she said.
According to her, the “Walk for a Greener Nigeria” campaign is aimed at promoting cleaner environments, encouraging responsible environmental habits, and stimulating public conversations around climate change, waste management, and ecological preservation.
She added that the initiative reflects COWA’s commitment to advocacy-driven sustainability programmes capable of delivering measurable social impact.
“Our vision is to make environmental consciousness a way of life in our communities. Through the Green Borders initiative, we want to inspire local ownership, encourage partnerships, and build a nationwide movement where sustainability is driven not only by policy, but by people,” Mrs Adeniyi added.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, and the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, are expected to participate in the advocacy walk alongside other dignitaries, underscoring institutional support for climate action and environmental sustainability initiatives.
The event is also expected to strengthen collaboration among government agencies, environmental groups, communities, and other stakeholders, while encouraging Nigerians, particularly women and youths, to take active roles in environmental protection and long-term ecological preservation.
Participants are expected to use the platform to amplify calls for greener communities, sustainable environmental practices, and stronger public engagement in addressing climate-related challenges across the country.
Through the planned advocacy walk, Mrs Adeniyi continues to position COWA as a key player in community-based environmental mobilisation and public awareness on sustainable development
