By Aviashima Toom, Abuja
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Tuesday commissioned 80 housing units under the Nigerian Army Affordable Home Ownership Scheme in Jos, Plateau State, reaffirming the Army's commitment to improving the welfare of its personnel.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on June 30, 2026, General Shaibu said the housing initiative forms part of his "Soldier-First Culture," which he described as a key driver of operational effectiveness and national security. He noted that providing affordable and quality housing for soldiers is a strategic investment in their welfare, morale and combat readiness.
The Army Chief said the welfare of personnel and their families remains a central pillar of his leadership philosophy, stressing that motivated and professionally fulfilled soldiers are better equipped to carry out the constitutional responsibilities of the Nigerian Army.
According to him, the 80 housing units commissioned in Jos are in addition to the 60 units delivered last year, while another 120 units in Abuja and 40 units in Benin are scheduled for commissioning as part of ongoing efforts to improve the living conditions of military personnel nationwide.
General Shaibu also announced that five per cent of the newly constructed housing units have been reserved for soldiers wounded in action, describing the gesture as a demonstration of the Army's appreciation for personnel who sustained injuries while defending the country.
He urged beneficiaries to maintain the facilities, noting that home ownership represents stability, responsibility and recognition of dedicated service to the nation.
Earlier, the Managing Director of Post-Service Housing Development Limited, Major General Isaiah Alison, commended the Chief of Army Staff for prioritising the welfare of personnel. He disclosed that additional housing projects are underway to extend the initiative to more soldiers across the country.
During his visit to Jos, Lieutenant General Shaibu also commissioned newly completed trainee hostels and convenience facilities at the 3 Division Training School, saying the projects reflect the Nigerian Army's commitment to strengthening personnel welfare and institutional capacity in support of enhanced operational readiness.
