Democracy Day: Support Tinubu’s Reforms, Protect Nigeria’s Democratic Gains — APC Chairman
By Aviashima Toom, Abuja
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has called on Nigerians to safeguard the nation’s democratic achievements and support the ongoing reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu aimed at building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.
In a Democracy Day message issued on Friday, Yilwatda urged citizens to reflect on the significance of June 12 and recommit themselves to the ideals of unity, patriotism, good governance, and national development.
Describing June 12 as a landmark in Nigeria’s democratic history, the APC chairman said the date symbolizes the courage and sacrifices of patriots who fought for justice, electoral integrity, and the sovereignty of the Nigerian people.
“Democracy Day is not merely another public holiday; it is a solemn reminder of our collective struggle for freedom, representative government, and the right of every Nigerian to determine the destiny of our nation through democratic means,” he said.
According to him, the occasion offers Nigerians an opportunity to assess the country’s democratic progress and renew their commitment to protecting institutions that uphold constitutional governance.
Yilwatda noted that democracy has provided a platform for peaceful political participation, accountability, protection of fundamental rights, and meaningful citizen engagement in nation-building.
He stressed that all Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation, have a responsibility to defend democracy and preserve the constitutional order.
“Every generation has a responsibility to defend democracy. The sacrifices made by our democratic heroes should never be forgotten, nor should we allow actions capable of undermining our constitutional order,” he stated.
The APC chairman also called on political leaders, civil society groups, the media, religious organizations, youth groups, and other stakeholders to promote dialogue, tolerance, respect for the rule of law, and peaceful participation in the democratic process.
On the economy, Yilwatda urged Nigerians to support the reforms being implemented by President Tinubu under the Renewed Hope Agenda, describing them as necessary steps toward long-term national development.
He said the administration’s policies are designed to reposition Nigeria for sustainable economic growth, infrastructure development, improved social welfare, increased investment opportunities, and greater prosperity for future generations.
While acknowledging that reforms may require patience and sacrifice, he maintained that difficult but strategic decisions are often necessary to achieve lasting progress.
According to him, ongoing reforms across key sectors are aimed at strengthening public institutions, creating jobs, improving the investment climate, expanding business opportunities, and building a more competitive and inclusive economy.
The APC chairman appealed to Nigerians to remain hopeful, resilient, and united in pursuit of a stronger nation, while rejecting violence, misinformation, division, and actions that could threaten democratic stability.
“Our greatest tribute to the heroes of June 12 is to preserve the democracy they fought for and work together to build a peaceful, prosperous, and united Nigeria for generations yet unborn,” he said.
Yilwatda wished Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Democracy Day celebration and reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity, and supporting policies that advance the country’s development.
