Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have rescued 10 National Examinations Council (NECO) candidates and teachers who were abducted during an attack by suspected ISWAP terrorists on Lassa Community in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.

According to the, Acting Military Information Officer Headquarters Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI, Maiduguri, Captain Mohammed Goni,
the attack occurred at about 9:00 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026, at the Technical Secondary School in Lassa while students were writing their NECO examinations.

The military said it immediately deployed troops, supported by strike aircraft and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms from the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI, to conduct a coordinated search and rescue operation.

During the operation, troops reportedly engaged the fleeing terrorists around Daggu in a firefight that led to the rescue of the 10 abducted victims. The rescued candidates and teachers were said to be unharmed and are currently receiving care, while efforts are ongoing to rescue one remaining victim.

The military also disclosed that several terrorists were neutralised during the operation, while seven motorcycles used by the insurgents were recovered, disrupting their escape.

However, the operation recorded casualties on the side of the security forces, with one soldier attached to Operation HADIN KAI and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) killed during the exchange of gunfire.

Operation HADIN KAI said troops, in collaboration with other security agencies, have intensified operations in the area and strengthened security around vulnerable communities and schools to prevent further attacks.

The military described the attack as another indication of the insurgents' strategy of targeting soft targets amid sustained military pressure. It reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling terrorist networks and restoring peace across Nigeria's North-East.

The military also urged residents to remain vigilant, provide credible information to security agencies, and rely only on official updates regarding the incident as operations continue.
