The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its defence cooperation with the United States of America.
Oluyede gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by the United States Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Department of State, Mr Frank Garcia, to the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.
The CDS, who was represented by the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Francis Edosa, described the Nigeria-US relationship as one built on mutual respect, shared democratic values and a common interest in promoting regional and global peace and security.
Edosa acknowledged the continued support of the United States to Nigeria in key areas, including military training, intelligence sharing, counterterrorism efforts and institutional development.
He said the changing security environment across Africa required stronger international partnerships to effectively tackle terrorism, violent extremism, transnational organised crime and other emerging threats.
According to him, the visit would further strengthen bilateral defence ties and create opportunities for expanded cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The Chief of Defence Policy and Plans also reiterated the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to professionalism, regional stability and sustained efforts towards achieving lasting peace and security in Nigeria and across Africa.
In his remarks, Garcia expressed appreciation for the reception accorded his delegation and reaffirmed the United States Government’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with Nigeria.
He recognised Nigeria’s important role in advancing peace and security in West Africa and the wider African continent, while commending the efforts of the Nigerian military in addressing terrorism and other security challenges.
The US envoy assured Defence Headquarters of continued American support through increased defence cooperation, security assistance and strategic engagement.
The meeting provided an opportunity for both countries to discuss regional security challenges, enhance mutual understanding and explore further areas of collaboration to advance shared security goals.
