Troops Intensify Search as Gunmen Abduct Bungudu LG Chairman, Rescue Five Family Members

Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have intensified efforts to rescue the abducted Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Honourable Nura Umar Abdullahi, following a deadly attack on his residence by armed terrorists in the early hours of Friday.


In a  statement  signed by Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, Media Information Officer, Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, said  the attackers overpowered the Chairman's police and local vigilante security detail before abducting him alongside members of his family.

The statement  said troops responded immediately after hearing gunshots and engaged the fleeing terrorists in a fierce gun battle.

The swift response forced the attackers to abandon five members of the Chairman's family, including his wife, mother, two children and another relative, all of whom were rescued. However, the terrorists escaped into nearby bushes with the Chairman.

The attack claimed the lives of two police officers and a local vigilante member who were part of the Chairman's security detail and reportedly resisted the assailants. A civilian was also killed, while the Chairman's elder brother, Alhaji Bello Umar, sustained injuries during the incident.

Following the attack, the Theatre Command activated a coordinated search-and-rescue operation involving troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and local vigilante groups.

The military said security personnel are conducting deliberate operations in suspected terrorist hideouts with the objective of rescuing the abducted council chairman safely.

"The Theatre Command has deployed all available resources in the ongoing operation and remains in close coordination with participating security agencies," the statement said.

It assured the Zamfara State Government and residents that every lawful and operational measure is being taken to secure the Chairman's release and bring those responsible to justice.

The Command also appealed to residents to remain calm, continue their lawful activities and provide credible information through established security channels that could support the ongoing operation.

Flood Alert: Benue Basin Water Levels Near Flood, designates camps in 18 Local Government

Towards this end, the Benue State Government has designated camps in 18 Local Government Areas to shift would-be victims of flood.
