Army Reaffirms Commitment to Protecting Nigeria’s Energy Infrastructure

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to protecting critical energy infrastructure and strengthening partnerships aimed at supporting Nigeria’s economic growth and national development.

Shaibu made the commitment on Wednesday when the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited, Mr. Tony Attah, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to Army Headquarters in Abuja.

The Army Chief described energy security as a key component of national security, stressing that the protection of strategic energy assets was essential to sustaining industrial productivity, economic stability and national development.

He assured the delegation of the Army’s continued support in securing critical national infrastructure and creating a safe environment for legitimate economic activities to thrive.

Shaibu also emphasised the importance of sustained engagement between energy companies and their host communities. He commended Renaissance Africa Energy for its efforts to build constructive relationships with communities in its areas of operation.

According to him, mutual trust, dialogue and shared interests are essential to promoting peace and stability in communities hosting energy operations.

The COAS further said the ongoing expansion and transformation of the Nigerian Army would improve its operational reach and responsiveness to emerging security challenges.

He explained that the expansion of formations, alongside improvements in manpower, infrastructure and operational capabilities, would strengthen the Army’s capacity to protect critical national assets and support the Federal Government’s development objectives.

Earlier, Attah commended officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for their sacrifices in securing the country and protecting strategic economic assets, particularly in challenging operational environments.

He said a secure operating environment was crucial to the sustainability of Nigeria’s energy sector and pledged Renaissance Africa Energy’s continued commitment to promoting energy security, indigenous capacity development and industrialisation.

Flood Alert: Benue Basin Water Levels Near Flood, designates camps in 18 Local Government

From Aviashima Toom, Abuja  SAHEL ReportersNews: Benue State Government and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) have raised the alarm saying the rising water levels along the River Benue Basin have neared flooding any moment from now. Towards this end, the Benue State Government has designated camps in 18 Local Government Areas to shift would-be victims of flood. Data released by NIHSA yesterday showed a steady increase in water levels, approaching the flood threshold. “Water levels recorded at key gauge stations are alarming, with Wuro Boki at 6.36 metres and Jimeta Bridge at 5.04 metres. “Ibbi station stands at 8.2 metres, Makurdi at 9.4 metres, and Lokoja (Niger River) at 8. 68 metres,” the report said. It noted that the rising waters, especially at Makurdi and Ibbi, had placed the River Benue Basin on high alert.
