EMCAN Executive Meets Immediate Past Chairman, Reaffirms Commitment to Unity and Growth

The newly elected Executive Committee of the Environmental Correspondents Association of Nigeria (EMCAN), led by its Chairman, Joycelyn Ellakeche Adah, has met with the immediate past Chairman of the association, Mr. Amechi Chukwuekwu Oyema, as part of efforts to strengthen unity and promote the growth of the organisation.

The meeting, held on September 8, provided an opportunity for the new leadership to appreciate Oyema for his sportsmanship and contributions to the development of EMCAN, particularly his support for a smooth transition of leadership.

In a statement jointly signed by the EMCAN Chairman, Joycelyn Ellakeche Adah, and the Secretary, Samuel Adeyinka, the association said the meeting also focused on strategies to strengthen EMCAN and reposition it for greater impact.

The statement said both sides exchanged ideas on ways to promote professionalism among environmental journalists, create more opportunities for members and enhance the association's visibility and influence at both national and international levels.

Adah expressed appreciation to the immediate past chairman for his openness and support, while reaffirming the commitment of the new executive to building a more inclusive and stronger association.

She said the new leadership would ensure that every member has a role to play in advancing the objectives and development of EMCAN.

Oyema, on his part, stressed the importance of collective responsibility among members, noting that unity and cooperation would be critical to achieving local and international recognition for the association.

The meeting also considered possible ways of addressing areas that could pose challenges to the success of the current executive and explored measures to ensure a smooth and effective administration.

The meeting ended on a positive note, with both the new and former leadership reaffirming their commitment to the unity, progress and continued growth of EMCAN.

Flood Alert: Benue Basin Water Levels Near Flood, designates camps in 18 Local Government

From Aviashima Toom, Abuja  SAHEL ReportersNews: Benue State Government and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) have raised the alarm saying the rising water levels along the River Benue Basin have neared flooding any moment from now. Towards this end, the Benue State Government has designated camps in 18 Local Government Areas to shift would-be victims of flood. Data released by NIHSA yesterday showed a steady increase in water levels, approaching the flood threshold. “Water levels recorded at key gauge stations are alarming, with Wuro Boki at 6.36 metres and Jimeta Bridge at 5.04 metres. “Ibbi station stands at 8.2 metres, Makurdi at 9.4 metres, and Lokoja (Niger River) at 8. 68 metres,” the report said. It noted that the rising waters, especially at Makurdi and Ibbi, had placed the River Benue Basin on high alert.
