Nigerian Army Repositions Senior Officers to Boost Operational Effectiveness, National Security

The Nigerian Army has announced the strategic redeployment of senior officers to key command, operational and staff positions as part of efforts to strengthen operational effectiveness and improve the Service’s response to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

The redeployments were approved by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, with the exercise focused on positioning officers with the requisite experience and expertise in critical operational theatres and strategic appointments.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the exercise is designed to enhance leadership, strengthen command structures and ensure the effective deployment of expertise in line with the country's changing security environment.

Among the major changes, Major General IA Ajose has been redeployed from the Army Headquarters, Department of Army Operations, to the Theatre Command, Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, as Theatre Commander.
Major General AE Abubakar, who previously served in Operation HADIN KAI, has been redeployed to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre as Dean, Faculty of Operational Research.

Major General AM Alechenu moves from the Defence Headquarters Garrison to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, while Major General RT Utsaha moves from the Army Headquarters, Department of Army Standards and Evaluation, to the Defence Headquarters Garrison as Commander.

In other senior appointments, Major General AM Umar moves from the Army Headquarters Department of Civil-Military Affairs to the Army War College Nigeria as Commandant, while Major General UM Alkali moves from the War College to the Department of Civil-Military Affairs.

Major General GS Muhammed moves from the Office of the National Security Adviser to the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation as Director-General.

Major General JE Osifo moves from the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation to the Military Pension Board as Chairman, while Major General IE Ekpenyong has been redeployed to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Logistics as Director, Engineering Services.

The latest postings also affect several operational and formation-level appointments.

Brigadier General AA Bello moves from the 6 Division Garrison/Sector 3 Joint Task Force, South-South, Operation DELTA SAFE, to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Operations.

Brigadier General MS Adamu has been redeployed from the Nigerian Army Women Command to take charge of the newly established 8 Brigade as Commander.

Brigadier General MS Sule moves from the Special Task Force, Operation ENDURING PEACE, to the 27 Task Force Brigade as Commander.

Similarly, Brigadier General I Sule moves from the Directorate of Recruitment Management to the 6 Division Garrison as Commander, while Brigadier General E Azenda moves from the Land Forces Simulation Centre to the 2 Division Garrison as Commander.

Brigadier General AS Bugaje, formerly Commander of the 2 Division Garrison, has been redeployed to the Land Forces Simulation Centre as Director of Administration.

Colonel Anele said the Chief of Army Staff charged the newly appointed officers to justify the confidence reposed in them through exemplary leadership, operational innovation, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to duty.

The officers were also tasked with remaining focused on the constitutional mandate of the Nigerian Army, including defending Nigeria's sovereignty, protecting its territorial integrity and supporting civil authorities in maintaining peace and security.

The Nigerian Army, according to the statement, remains committed to sustaining a dynamic leadership and force-employment framework capable of improving operational outcomes, strengthening joint and inter-agency coordination and enhancing its capacity to respond decisively to contemporary and emerging security threats.

The Army said the latest redeployments are part of its broader efforts to advance Nigeria's national security objectives.

Flood Alert: Benue Basin Water Levels Near Flood, designates camps in 18 Local Government

Towards this end, the Benue State Government has designated camps in 18 Local Government Areas to shift would-be victims of flood. Data released by NIHSA yesterday showed a steady increase in water levels, approaching the flood threshold. “Water levels recorded at key gauge stations are alarming, with Wuro Boki at 6.36 metres and Jimeta Bridge at 5.04 metres. “Ibbi station stands at 8.2 metres, Makurdi at 9.4 metres, and Lokoja (Niger River) at 8. 68 metres,” the report said.
