Police Foil Mob Lynching in Calabar, Arrest Alleged Instigator

The Cross River State Police Command has foiled an attempt by a mob to lynch a man accused of stealing mobile phones in Calabar.

The incident occurred around Harbour Junction, Calabar, on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, following a distress call received by the police at about 8:30 a.m.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Cross River State Police Command, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, a police patrol team was immediately dispatched to the scene, where officers found a man identified as Chukwu Ebuka being attacked by an angry mob.

The officers intervened, rescued Ebuka and evacuated him to an undisclosed medical facility, where he is currently receiving treatment for multiple injuries sustained during the attack.

The police also arrested a 56-year-old man identified as Azubike Micheal for allegedly instigating the mob and encouraging others to attack Ebuka.

The Command said Micheal is currently in police custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident and the allegations that led to the mob attack.

The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, maintaining public order and ensuring that allegations of criminal conduct are handled in accordance with the law.

He cautioned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands, urging them to report suspected criminal activities to the police rather than resorting to mob violence.

The Commissioner further assured residents that the police would continue to respond swiftly to threats to public safety and ensure that justice is pursued through lawful means.

Flood Alert: Benue Basin Water Levels Near Flood, designates camps in 18 Local Government

Towards this end, the Benue State Government has designated camps in 18 Local Government Areas to shift would-be victims of flood. Data released by NIHSA yesterday showed a steady increase in water levels, approaching the flood threshold. “Water levels recorded at key gauge stations are alarming, with Wuro Boki at 6.36 metres and Jimeta Bridge at 5.04 metres. “Ibbi station stands at 8.2 metres, Makurdi at 9.4 metres, and Lokoja (Niger River) at 8. 68 metres,” the report said.
