2027: The Case for Felix Ngutswen in Kwande/Ushongo

By Lazarus Zakaa

As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the race for the Kwande/Ushongo Federal Constituency is gradually taking shape, with the contest increasingly becoming a battle of personalities, records and perceived capacity, rather than party platforms alone.

Among the emerging aspirants is Hon. Felix Terese Ngutswen (FTN), whose supporters are presenting him as a new-generation politician with a combination of business experience, youth mobilisation and political exposure.

For constituents who have expressed concerns over the quality and impact of representation in the constituency, the emerging debate is increasingly centred on a fundamental question: Who has the capacity, experience and vision to effectively represent Kwande/Ushongo at the National Assembly?

Supporters of Ngutswen believe he deserves serious consideration for several reasons.

1. An educational background rooted in enterprise

Ngutswen began his education at LGEA Yina, Ukum Mbawandam, before proceeding to Government Secondary School, Ushongo. He later obtained a degree in Entrepreneurship and Business Management.

His supporters argue that his academic background provides him with practical knowledge relevant to entrepreneurship, economic empowerment, financial management and job creation.

2. Experience in the private sector

As Managing Director/CEO of FBTN Gate Nig. Ltd, Ngutswen has been involved in the private sector and business development.

His backers believe that experience gives him an understanding of the challenges confronting traders, farmers, artisans, entrepreneurs and small-business owners—groups that form an important part of the economic base of Kwande/Ushongo.

3. Pan-African leadership exposure

In 2020, Ngutswen was reportedly named a member of the Pan-African Youth Leaders by the Kwame Nkrumah Leadership Foundation in Accra, Ghana.

His supporters regard the recognition as an indication of his exposure to youth leadership initiatives beyond Benue State.

4. National political mobilisation

His political experience also includes his reported appointment in 2018 as National Youth Leader of the Kwankwasiya Youth Network under the leadership of former Kano State Governor, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The role, according to his supporters, exposed him to political mobilisation, grassroots organisation and national political networking.

5. Legislative exposure

In 2022, Ngutswen served as Acting Speaker of the Middle Belt Parliament.
Supporters say the experience gave him exposure to parliamentary procedures, legislative debates, negotiation and consensus-building—skills they believe could be useful if he eventually becomes a member of the House of Representatives.

6. Grassroots political experience

Ngutswen previously contested the Makurdi South State Constituency seat under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 2019.

He also served as State Youth Leader for the Hinga Biem Governorship Campaign, experiences that provided him with exposure to grassroots mobilisation and electoral campaigns.

7. Youth advocacy

With unemployment, poverty and limited economic opportunities among major concerns confronting young people across Benue, Ngutswen's supporters point to his long-standing involvement in youth-oriented activities as one of his potential strengths.

They argue that a representative with a strong understanding of the challenges facing young people could push more aggressively for skills acquisition, entrepreneurship programmes and employment opportunities.

8. Leadership and personal qualities

Beyond his political and academic credentials, associates describe Ngutswen as a team player, a good listener and a responsible leader.
His supporters also highlight his commitment to family and community, arguing that effective representation requires not only political ambition but also accessibility, responsibility and the ability to work with people.

9. Networks and capacity to attract opportunities

Another major argument being advanced by his supporters is Ngutswen's network within business and political circles.
They believe his private-sector connections and political exposure could position him to attract federal interventions, development projects, investment opportunities and youth-focused programmes to Kwande/Ushongo.

10. A generational alternative

Perhaps the strongest argument being made for Ngutswen is the belief that the constituency needs a new generation of political leadership.

His supporters argue that the 2027 election should be about more than party loyalty. They want voters to examine the competence, experience, accessibility and track record of individual candidates.
As one member of the Ngutswen Grassroots Media Network put it: “Roads are not constructed by party logos. Jobs are not created by party slogans.

Kwande/Ushongo needs energy, accessibility and accountability.”
That argument will ultimately be tested by the voters.

For now, Felix Terese Ngutswen is positioning himself as a candidate seeking to combine youth mobilisation, business experience, political exposure and a promise of more effective representation.

Whether that proposition resonates with voters across Kwande and Ushongo—and whether his experience translates into the kind of representation constituents expect—will become clearer as the 2027 political contest gathers momentum.

For a constituency looking ahead to another electoral cycle, the real question may not simply be who is contesting, but who is prepared to represent its people effectively?
