APC Mocks Amaechi Over Mother’s Death, Says He Is ‘Unfit’ for VP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, over his reported inability to afford medication for his late mother, describing him as unfit for the office of Vice President.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, on Sunday, the APC expressed condolences over the death of Amaechi’s mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, while also taking a swipe at the former governor over comments concerning his financial circumstances.

Amaechi, who served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor of the state and Minister of Transportation, is currently the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The APC said it was ironic that a former holder of several high public offices could claim that he was unable to afford medication for his mother’s treatment.
The ruling party also referenced Amaechi’s previous statement that he had become financially constrained after leaving public office and that his wife was providing for him.

According to the APC, Amaechi’s comments raised questions about his ability to sustain himself and his family outside public office.

The party alleged that Amaechi had benefited from public office for decades and questioned why he had become financially distressed only a few years after leaving government.

“Rotimi Amaechi freeloaded at the highest levels of public office for four decades,” the APC alleged, adding that his reported financial difficulties demonstrated what it described as his inability to be productive outside government patronage.

The APC further criticised Amaechi’s bid to become vice president in 2027, alleging that his ambition was aimed at returning to the benefits associated with public office.

“The presidency is not a soup kitchen, and will not be a soup kitchen for Rotimi Amaechi,” the party said.

The APC concluded that Amaechi’s own statements, rather than its criticism, provided what it described as evidence of his alleged unsuitability for the vice-presidential position.
