The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has honoured Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, with its prestigious Christian Icon Award in recognition of his commitment to integrity, ethical leadership, public service and Christian values.

The award was presented by CAN President, His Eminence, Most Rev. Dr. Daniel C. Okoh, during the association’s 50th anniversary celebration at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, on Saturday.
Speaking at the ceremony, Okoh said the award was reserved for distinguished leaders whose conduct exemplified excellence, integrity, nation-building and the practical application of Christian principles in public life. He noted that Oborevwori’s contributions to national development and commitment to ethical leadership had made him deserving of the recognition.

According to the CAN president, the honour also acknowledged the governor’s commitment to upholding Christian values in governance and his contributions to the Christian community in Nigeria.

Reacting to the award, Oborevwori expressed gratitude to God, describing the recognition as a call to greater service to humanity. He said the honour was particularly significant because it came from CAN, stressing that the association’s recognition went beyond public office to encompass character, integrity and positive contributions to society.
The governor reaffirmed his commitment to serving God and humanity, urging political leaders not to allow political engagements to undermine their faith. He disclosed that his commitment to church service predated his emergence as Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, adding that he had remained steadfast despite earlier advice to discontinue the practice because of his political position.

Oborevwori also commended efforts to unite the five blocs within the Christian community, expressing optimism that speaking with one voice would strengthen the Church and contribute to national unity and development. He stressed that service to God should be driven by sincerity, dedication and a sense of responsibility rather than personal gratification or public recognition.

Among those who accompanied the governor to the ceremony were former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa; Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor; members of the National Assembly, Hon. Victor Nwokolo, Hon. Nicholas Mutu and Hon. Jonathan Ukodhiko; Chief of Staff, Government House, Hon. Johnson Erijo; and Senior Political Adviser to the Governor, Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, alongside other government officials and political leaders
