By Aviashima Toom, Abuja
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has commissioned 49 welfare and infrastructure projects across Nigerian Army formations and units nationwide, as part of efforts to improve personnel welfare, address accommodation challenges and enhance operational efficiency.
The projects include 11 commissioned in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and 38 others across Army formations and units nationwide.
At the commissioning ceremony on Thursday, October 29, 2026, the COAS inaugurated a newly constructed Officers Transit Accommodation at Life Camp, Abuja, designed to provide temporary housing for officers posted to Army Headquarters and other formations in the nation's capital.
Shaibu said the projects aligned with his command philosophy, particularly the pillars of Sound Administration and the Soldier First Concept, which prioritise personnel welfare in building a professional, adaptable, combat-ready and resilient Nigerian Army.
He emphasised that adequate accommodation and functional infrastructure were essential to boosting morale, improving productivity and strengthening the Army's capacity to fulfil its constitutional responsibilities.
The Army Chief charged officers who would occupy the newly commissioned facility to maintain it properly and uphold the highest standards of discipline and responsibility.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to sustained investment in personnel welfare and infrastructure across Army formations and units, while expressing appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support to the Nigerian Army.
Earlier, the Chief of Logistics (Army), Major General Adekunle Adeyinka, said the Officers Transit Accommodation was developed to address the temporary housing difficulties faced by officers posted to Abuja.
According to him, the facility comprises well-furnished, self-contained apartments equipped with modern amenities to provide comfortable accommodation for officers awaiting permanent housing allocations.
He added that the project was expected to improve personnel welfare and enhance administrative efficiency within the Army.
During the visit, Shaibu also inspected ongoing infrastructure projects at Life Camp, including additional accommodation blocks, road rehabilitation and drainage works.
The COAS expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work but directed contractors to comply strictly with approved project specifications and completion timelines.
The commissioning of the projects forms part of the Nigerian Army's broader efforts to address infrastructure deficits and provide a conducive living and working environment for personnel and their families.
The Army said improved welfare facilities and infrastructure would support effective administration, training and military operations, while strengthening personnel morale and operational readiness.
