Nigeria and Rwanda have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral defence cooperation and tackling emerging security threats across Africa.

The commitment was renewed when the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, paid a courtesy visit to Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Kigali on Thursday.

During the meeting, Shaibu conveyed the goodwill of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian Army, while appreciating Kagame for receiving the delegation.

The Army Chief commended Rwanda's transformation since the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, noting that the country's experience offered important lessons in national reconstruction, institutional resilience and social cohesion.

He also paid tribute to the courage and sacrifices of approximately 600 personnel of the 3rd Battalion during Rwanda's liberation struggle, stressing the importance of leadership, discipline and national unity in addressing Africa's security challenges.

As part of efforts to deepen military ties, Shaibu also held separate meetings with Rwanda's Minister of Defence, Chief of Defence Staff and Army Chief of Staff, Major General Vincent Nyakarundi.

The discussions focused on professional military exchanges and opportunities to strengthen cooperation in combating terrorism, violent extremism and other transnational security threats.

The Nigerian Army Chief also visited the Rwanda Engineering Manufacturing Company, REMCO, where he commended the country's indigenous engineering and manufacturing capabilities.

He expressed interest in technical exchanges, collaborative research, knowledge transfer and defence manufacturing partnerships to enhance Nigeria's local production, equipment maintenance and technical support capabilities.

According to a statement by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the engagements form part of the Nigerian Army's efforts to strengthen military capacity, interoperability and collective responses to regional insecurity.

Shaibu reaffirmed the Army's commitment to collaborating with the Rwanda Defence Force through specialised training, joint exercises, professional exchanges and defence technology cooperation.

He emphasised that sustained partnerships, mutual trust and shared responsibility among African countries remain essential to combating cross-border threats and promoting regional peace and stability.
