COAS Seeks Stronger Diplomatic, Military Cooperation During Rwanda Visit
By Aviashima Toom, Abuja

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called for stronger coordination between Nigeria's diplomatic missions and military institutions to advance defence cooperation and promote shared security interests across Africa.

Shaibu made the call during a courtesy visit to Nigeria's Acting High Commissioner to the Republic of Rwanda, Ambassador Ibrahim Zanna, in Kigali, as part of his official working visit to the East African country.

The visit, undertaken at the invitation of the Army Chief of Staff of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), Major General Vincent Nyakarundi, underscored the importance of diplomatic engagement in strengthening Nigeria's military partnerships and advancing bilateral defence relations.

The engagement provided an opportunity to highlight the need for closer collaboration between Nigeria's diplomatic mission in Rwanda and the Nigerian Army in facilitating professional military exchanges, promoting institutional partnerships and advancing shared security priorities.

Effective coordination between diplomatic and military institutions is considered essential to sustaining strategic partnerships, facilitating defence engagements and ensuring that military cooperation aligns with Nigeria's foreign policy and national security objectives.

The visit also highlighted the importance of a whole-of-government approach to protecting Nigeria's interests abroad and strengthening its contributions to regional security initiatives.

Through enhanced diplomatic-military coordination, Nigeria seeks to consolidate existing partnerships, expand opportunities for defence collaboration and support collective efforts to promote peace, stability and security across the African continent.

The engagement forms part of the Nigerian Army's broader efforts to deepen military relations with African partners and strengthen cooperation in addressing evolving security challenges.
