COAS, Zambian Army Chief Seek Stronger Military Cooperation Against Africa’s Security Threats

By Aviashima Toom, Abuja

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, and the Commander of the Zambia Army, Lieutenant General Geoffrey Choongo Zyeele, have pledged to strengthen military cooperation between Nigeria and Zambia to tackle Africa’s growing security challenges.

The two military chiefs made the commitment on Monday, October 26, 2026, during bilateral military talks on the sidelines of the African International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX) 2026 in Lagos.

Shaibu stressed the need for African countries to strengthen intelligence sharing, joint military training and coordinated operations to effectively combat terrorism, insurgency, transnational organised crime and unconstitutional changes of government.

He noted that the increasing complexity of security threats across the continent required a united front, stressing that no country could successfully address the challenges in isolation.

The COAS reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to deepening military-to-military relations with Zambia and other African partners, particularly in counter-terrorism operations, peace support missions, professional military training and capacity development.

In his response, Zyeele commended the Nigerian Army for its contributions to regional security and efforts to combat terrorism.

He expressed Zambia’s readiness to strengthen military ties with Nigeria, noting that enhanced cooperation would improve operational effectiveness and advance the shared security interests of both countries.

The bilateral engagement forms part of Shaibu’s activities at AFRIDEX 2026, which has brought together African military leaders, defence industry stakeholders and strategic partners to explore opportunities for defence cooperation, technological advancement and collective responses to emerging security threats.
