Cross River Police Intensify Maritime Security, Urge Riverine Communities to Report Suspicious Activities

The Cross River State Police Command has intensified security operations along the state’s waterways as part of efforts to curb maritime crimes and protect lives and livelihoods in riverine communities.

According to him, the initiative is being implemented under Operation Velvet Marine, with the command stepping up engagement with fishing communities and other maritime stakeholders to strengthen intelligence gathering and community-based vigilance.

The command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, said the latest efforts included a stakeholders’ engagement organised by the State Marine Police on Friday, October 2, 2026, at the Dolphin Marine Base, Calabar.

The meeting brought together 21 representatives from fishing settlements, including Tiger, Efik, Nsere, Ikpaedok, Natonda and Okon Beaches.

Discussions focused on the security and safety of the waterways, the welfare of fishermen and the need for stronger cooperation between riverine communities and security agencies.

The Police urged residents of riverine settlements to strengthen lawful community vigilance and work closely with recognised community security structures, the Marine Police and other security agencies to identify and promptly report suspicious activities.

According to the command, stakeholders also raised concerns relating to the safety, welfare and operations of fishermen across the waterways.

It said the issues had been noted for appropriate assessment and follow-up with relevant authorities, stressing that complaints and information received from members of the public would be properly verified before any conclusions or further action were taken.

To improve emergency response and information sharing, the command also provided its emergency contact numbers to participating communities.

Fishermen and other maritime stakeholders were urged to promptly report distress situations
