The Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) has expressed deep sadness over the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft crash in Ondo State, which reportedly claimed the lives of 25 people.

In a statement signed by its President, Odita Sunday, on Wednesday, the association described the incident as a tragic loss to the victims' families, the Nigerian Air Force and the nation.

DECAN extended its condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the deceased, noting that no words could adequately capture the pain of losing loved ones in such sudden and tragic circumstances.

The association also commiserated with the Chief of the Air Staff, officers and airmen of the Nigerian Air Force and the entire Armed Forces of Nigeria over the loss.

According to DECAN, the incident underscores the sacrifices routinely made by military personnel in the service of the country, often while operating under difficult and hazardous conditions.

The association acknowledged the courage and dedication of Nigerian Air Force personnel involved in operations to defend the country, while urging Nigerians to respect the dignity and privacy of the bereaved families.

DECAN further called on the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash and urged the public and media organisations to refrain from circulating unverified information, graphic materials and speculative reports.

The association said journalists covering the Armed Forces have a responsibility to ensure that tragedies of this nature are reported accurately, responsibly and with compassion.

“DECAN therefore reaffirms its commitment to responsible, accurate, compassionate and professional journalism, particularly in moments of national crisis,” the statement said.

The association prayed for strength and fortitude for the families of the victims and for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives in the crash.
