NAF ATR-42 Crash: DHQ Orders Investigation as Search, Rescue Operations Continue

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has expressed deep shock over the crash of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) ATR-42 aircraft near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, Ondo State.
The aircraft was reportedly on a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos when the incident occurred. Military personnel and some family members were said to be on board.
In a statement on Monday, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the Armed Forces of Nigeria extended its condolences to the families and loved ones of those involved in the crash, as well as the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the Nigerian Air Force and the wider Armed Forces community.
Uba described the incident as a painful loss to the Armed Forces and the nation, noting that military personnel continue to make sacrifices in the service of the country.
He said, in line with the directive of the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, an investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the accident.
He added that search and rescue operations were ongoing at the crash site, with the Nigerian Air Force working alongside sister Services and relevant emergency response agencies.
According to him, the Armed Forces remains committed to its constitutional responsibility of protecting the nation despite the incident.
“The sacrifice of our fallen heroes will continue to inspire our service to the nation,” Uba said.
The Defence Headquarters also appealed to members of the public to refrain from speculation and respect the privacy of the affected families while official procedures and investigations continue.
The DHQ prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives and strength for their families to bear the loss.
