Troops of the Joint Task Force, North East, Operation HADIN KAI, have repelled an attack by suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on a military base in Adamawa State, neutralising six insurgents and recovering arms and ammunition.
The attack targeted the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Garaha in Hong Local Government Area of the state at about 9:07 p.m., according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Theatre Command.
The statement said the terrorists advanced on foot from the LAR axis in an attempt to overrun the military position but were forced to retreat following a response by troops.
A subsequent search of the area led to the discovery of six terrorist bodies, confirming the neutralisation of the attackers.
Items recovered during the operation included one PKT machine gun with three ammunition belts containing 67 rounds, six AK-47 rifles, 11 AK-47 magazines, 157 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, 120 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and one 60mm mortar bomb.
Troops also recovered an Infinix Android phone, a Canon portable video recorder, three camelback water bags, a magazine carrier and assorted clothing.
The statement, signed by Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer at Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, disclosed that some military personnel sustained casualties during the encounter.
It added that the wounded personnel were receiving medical attention, while evacuation arrangements were ongoing.
According to the military, troops have intensified vigilance and continued search operations around the area to prevent further attacks and recover additional items of operational importance.
The Theatre Command described the successful repulsion of the attack as a demonstration of the troops' combat readiness and determination to defend their positions against terrorist offensives.
It reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining intelligence-driven operations to weaken terrorist capabilities, restrict their movements and protect vulnerable communities across the North-East.
The military also said it would continue operations aimed at restoring lasting peace and security in the region.
