Udeze Accuses INEC Officials of Secret Suit Against Action Alliance Leadership
By Aviashima Toom, Abuja
The National Chairman of the Action Alliance (AA), Chief Barrister Kenneth Udeze, has accused some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of allegedly conspiring with one Adekunle Omoaje to institute a secret suit aimed at challenging his leadership of the party.
Udeze, in a statement issued on Sunday, described the development as another attempt to undermine the leadership of the party, insisting that the issues raised in the alleged suit are already before a Federal High Court in an ongoing pre-election matter instituted by what he described as the authentic leadership of the Action Alliance.
According to him, the latest legal action amounts to a duplication of proceedings and raises questions about the interest of some INEC officials in the leadership crisis within the party.
“We have uncovered this hide-and-seek game and we shall not hesitate to expose the rot in the Commission if it continues to disobey the subsisting judgment of the Court of Appeal which affirmed my leadership,” Udeze said.
He maintained that the leadership dispute in the Action Alliance predates the tenure of most of the INEC officials allegedly involved in the matter, urging the electoral commission to respect the court's pronouncements on the issue.
“The leadership tussle of Action Alliance is older than 90 per cent of the Commission's staff now trying to sit on a history older than them. They must recognise my leadership as affirmed by law,” he stated.
Udeze also questioned INEC's interest in the internal affairs of the party, recalling that he had faced several periods of detention, including incarceration at Ilesha Prison in Osun State, during the course of the leadership struggle.
He urged INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, to ensure that the commission operates within the bounds of the law and does not allow itself to be used to destabilise the party.
“Prof. Amupitan's INEC must obey the rule of law. It must not allow itself to be used as a tool to destabilise a lawful political party,” he said.
The AA chairman vowed that his faction would continue to resist what he described as attempts to truncate the party's lawful leadership, insisting that no alleged conspiracy could override existing judicial pronouncements.
