The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening defence and security cooperation with Nigeria, with emphasis on military training, professional military education, technology transfer and institutional capacity building.

The commitment was reiterated on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, when the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Pete Vowles, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General OO Oluyede, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

During the visit, Vowles expressed appreciation for the longstanding political, diplomatic and military relations between both countries, describing defence and security cooperation as a critical pillar of the UK-Nigeria bilateral partnership.

He reaffirmed the United Kingdom's determination to sustain existing security initiatives and explore new areas of collaboration to address evolving regional and global security challenges.

The British envoy also stressed the importance of maintaining a strong and mutually beneficial partnership that would promote regional stability and strengthen Nigeria's capacity to tackle contemporary security threats.

In his response, General Oluyede highlighted the longstanding historical ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, noting that both countries had maintained a productive defence relationship over several decades.

He emphasised the need to sustain and expand existing areas of cooperation, particularly in professional military education, technology transfer and institutional capacity building.

According to the CDS, existing defence agreements and military training programmes have contributed significantly to improving the professional competence and operational capabilities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

Oluyede further noted that continued collaboration with strategic international partners remained vital to strengthening the military's capacity to respond effectively to emerging security threats.

He added that such partnerships would also promote self-reliance, institutional resilience and operational efficiency within the Armed Forces.

Both parties expressed optimism about the future of the UK-Nigeria defence and security partnership, pledging to build on existing achievements and explore additional areas of cooperation for mutual benefit.

The development underscores the continued commitment of both countries to strengthening bilateral defence relations and enhancing their capacity to address shared security challenges.
