Nigerian Diaspora: Uniting to promote peace and development

 By Aviashima Toom, Abuja On Sunday July 25, Nigeria celebrated its 15th National Diaspora Day under the theme: “Diaspora Integration for National Peace and Development”.  Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration launched this event in 2006 in recognition of the diaspora’s contribution to national development.  The 2021 virtual celebration in the form of a webinar was organised by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), an organisation that provides a platform to engage Nigerians in the diaspora in policies, projects and participation in the socio-economic, cultural and political development of the country. In her opening remarks, Chairperson of NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa noted the inextricable link between peace and development. Her remarks were pertinent in light of the ongoing security quagmire in Nigeria, ranging from Boko Haram terrorism to the Niger-Delta crisis, the farmer-herder conflict and kidnappings by “bandits”. Minister Urges Diaspora Group To Counter False Narratives About Nigeria

By Aviashima Toom, Abuja The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has called on the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) to help counter the false narratives by secessionist groups, insurgents and anarchists who portray Nigeria in a bad light. The Minister made the call in Abuja on Tuesday when he received members of NIDO, UK Chapter, on a courtesy visit.   “As an organized and well connected group, i implore NIDO to leverage its contacts in government circles, parliamentary groups and global think tanks in world capitals to help change the narrative and sweep the carpet off the feet of secessionist groups, insurgents and anarchists who are bent on pushing false narratives to portray Nigeria in bad light. ”I have no doubt that you will take this call seriously and do everything in your power to change the narrative for the better,” he said. Chibuzo Ubochi, disclosed this on Monday when he led NIDO UK South members on a courtesy visit to the School in Abuja. He commended the founder/Educational Therapist for her initiative, said some members of the Organization who are experts in variouse fields especially in Mental Diognosis and other Medical areas, will also assist the school as a way of giving back to the society. Konshisha Crises: Youths Appeal for Military Presence to Forestall Further Loss of Lives

By Reporter Igede Youths have appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the redeployment of troops to the disputed boundary between Bonta and Ukpute in Konshisha and Oju Local Government Areas (LGAs), Benue to forestall further loss of lives and property. The Igede Youth made the appeal through its Spoke man, Mr Thomas Ogar on Sunday while briefing newsmen in Makurdi. Ogar stated that the crisis between the two communities started in June 2020, stressing that since then to date so many lives and property were lost. “But with the redeployment of the troops at the disputed boundary peace will be restored. “Also, a military or security post should be established at the boundary to tame the killings and destruction of lives as well as property. “The president should also mandate Gov. FG Distributes Farm Imputes To 150 Rice Farmers in Benue

By Reporter Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) distributed farm inputs to 150 rice farmers in Benue. The Minister of Agriculture, Alhaji Mohammed Nanono performed the function on Wednesday in Makurdi. Represented by the Agricultural Officer, Rice Value Chain, Mr Michael Ameh, Nanono said that 10 states were benefitting from the programme and Benue was one of them. The minister said that the aim was to assist farmers with the inputs to enable them step up production of rice and enhance their income too. “Each farmer will be given 50kg of certified rice seeds, four bags of NPK, two bags of Urea and one litre of soil amender. “They will also be given four litres of pesticides and five litres of pre and post emergence herbicides,” he said. By Aviashima Toom The Gombe State governor and Chairman of the All Progressives Congress five-man Appeal Panel, Alhaji Inuwa Yahaya today submitted his Committee report. The Committee which has Dr Ijeoma Arodiogbu as Secretary was set up following the rejection of the outcome of the APC primary that produced Senator Andy Uba as the party standard-bearer for the November 6 governorship primary. Eleven out of the 14 Governorship primary had kicked against the outcome of the June 26 primary. Managing Director of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and one of the aspirants, George Moghalu had said no primary was conducted in Awka. In league with him were Paul Orajiaka and Edozie Madu, Johnbosco Onunkwo, Ben Etiaba, Amobi Nwaokafor, Chidozie Nwankwo, Geoffo Onyjegbu, Azuka Okwuosa and two others.
